Greater New Orleans’ premier, Catholic non-profit hospice
As the only Catholic non-profit hospice in the Greater New Orleans area, we are called to serve our brothers and sisters. Hospice is about providing care beyond the cure. To us, hospice is about faith, hope and love – when the focus becomes more about the life that remains rather than an illness. Hospice care can be provided both in home or at one of Notre Dame Health System’s communities, which include Chateau de Notre Dame, Our Lady of Wisdom and Wynhoven. No matter the location, our goal remains the same: to provide support for your loved one’s medical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Respect & peace of mind
When your loved one experiences a sudden, life-changing event or transitions into an end-of-life situation, you can count on us to deliver joy, grace and love for their peace of mind. To us, hospice is not giving up hope – it’s lifting spirits. We take the time to get to know our patients’ loved ones and to familiarize ourselves with their unique needs and preferences. We employ a compassionate and kind staff that readily responds to the specific physical, spiritual and emotional needs of our patients and their families.
Hospice options to fit your needs
We proudly offer four distinct levels of hospice care to our neighbors in the Gulf South community: Routine Home Care, Respite Care, General In-Patient Care and Continuous Home Care.
WE HONOR VETERANS
We are committed to serving all veterans with respect, integrity and dignity. We try to match as many of our veterans as possible with volunteers who are veterans themselves. The familiarity and shared background help our patients as they relive memories from some of their most indelible life experiences.

4 Levels of hospice care
Routine Home Care
Our Routine Home Care service generally accommodates those residing in a private home, apartment, assisted living facility or skilled nursing home. Led by a Registered Nurse Case Manager (RNCM), you will work with a team of hospice caregivers to design a custom plan-of-care to meet your loved one’s unique needs. These plans-of-care typically include routine visits from Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, social workers, chaplains and trained volunteers. Each member of our Routine Home Care team serves a distinct purpose in maintaining the excellent care and support expected from Notre Dame Health System.
We often partner with long-term care facilities to meet the needs of patients with life-limiting illnesses. Our Hospice Nurse Case Manager educates each facility’s nursing staff on the distinct health conditions associated with terminally ill patients and coordinates advanced pain management programs often needed during end-of-life care. We work hand-in-hand with each facility’s Certified Nursing Assistants to ensure your loved one is graciously attended to while in our care.
Being the main caregiver to a sick loved one can be physically and emotionally draining. Our Respite Care option lets primary caregivers take the well-needed break they deserve while we care for their loved one. Our philosophy of care encompasses the whole family; we provide peace of mind and support not only to our patients but to their caregivers.
Respite Care is provided in contracted inpatient facilities where your loved one is supervised by our onsite RNs. This care continues just as it was in the patient’s home with regular visits by our hospice team members. Respite Care is covered by Medicare, MediCAL and private insurance. We are trained to support your family and your loved ones through advanced illness; you are not on this journey alone.
Continuous Home Care
A sudden crisis does not mean your loved one has to leave home. It also does not mean you are expected to provide around-the-clock care while also managing your own personal life. Continuous Home Care is a great option for caregivers who need a little “me time” every once in a while.
With Continuous Home Care, caregivers and patients are accompanied by a member of our nursing staff for a minimum 8-hour period followed by as many follow-up periods as deemed necessary by hospice staff. This service enables you to set realistic expectations for yourself during this unexpected situation. While feelings of guilt are perfectly normal at the beginning of our partnership, we are confident our efforts will give you peace of mind.
If your loved one is too ill to remain in a private residence, we offer advanced in-patient skilled care services at our beautiful residential communities throughout the Greater New Orleans area. We are here to support your loved ones with warm, compassionate care.
Located on the Archdiocese campus in Uptown New Orleans, Chateau de Notre Dame is a wonderful option for those looking to remain in New Orleans. You can learn more about life at Chateau de Notre Dame.
Our two Westbank facilities, Our Lady of Wisdom and Wynhoven, are situated on sprawling properties and feature home-like interiors designed to make patients feel comfortable and embraced. Learn more about Our Lady of Wisdom and Wynhoven Healthcare Center.
In-Patient Care residents can also enjoy the company of family and friends without the restrictions of visiting hours. Furthermore, we offer guest apartments for families wishing to remain near their loved ones for as long as they would like. In-Patient Care can mean a big transition for families, and we are here to help ease that transition with the tenderness your unique situation deserves.
